How Often Should I Exfoliate?

The trick to taking care of your skin is knowing when it needs attention or treatment, and when you might be doing too much. Because everyone’s skin is different, everyone will have a different approach to maintaining healthy and beautiful skin.

Our body is constantly producing new skin cells every minute of every day whether we realize it or not. This regeneration of new skin cells is essential as our bodies are also losing dead skin cells at a very rapid pace. In some cases, these dead cells do not drop off as well as they should, which can lead to issues such as clogged pores and acne. Exfoliating your skin is a great way to remove dead skin cells allowing for the healthy growth of new ones.

Many would argue that their skin never feels better or healthier then after an exfoliation. The goal is softer, cleaner skin that feels smooth. Some people exfoliate their skin too often, resulting in irritation and redness. There is a balance that should be adhered to when it comes to how often you should exfoliate to ensure your skin is as healthy as possible.

There are some important factors to consider when deciding how often to exfoliate. These factors include:

  •      Products used – There are a variety of products that can be used when exfoliating to achieve the desired results. These products include scrubs, sponges, cloths, soaps, and lotions. Using the right combination of these products will often dictate how often you can exfoliate before you cause damage to your skin. For example, some scrubs may be more abrasive than others and should be used less frequently.
  •      Sensitivity of skin – The sensitivity of your skin plays a major role in deciding how often to exfoliate. Daily exfoliation may not be a good idea for those with extremely delicate skin as it could lead to damage, which could include raw, dry, red skin.  It’s best to speak to your skincare professional regarding how often exfoliation products should be used and when.
  •      Climate – Depending on where you live and the type of weather you encounter, you may have to make slight changes in your exfoliation habits. Warmer climates can often produce a more rapid rate of dead skin, especially in the heat of the Southwest. This means that you will want to exfoliate more frequently. You may find that your schedule will change from season to season.
