Irregular moles can be a good indication of changes in the health of your skin. While most moles are harmless and some people are predisposed to having moles, it’s important to keep an eye on any irregularities. Skin cancer is extremely common and we see it all of the time at our dermatologist’s office in Phoenix. Here are the things you should monitor to discover an irregular mole.
1. Changes in color
If your mole is developing spots of brown or black or if the border is beginning to spread into the surrounding skin, visiting a dermatologist for an irregular mole evaluation is important.
2. Changes in shape
Changes in the outer edge of your mole such as jagged edges or a bumpy texture also call for a visit to the dermatologist.
3. Changes in size
The general rule of thumb for irregular moles is they shouldn’t surpass the size of a pencil eraser. Any growth can be grounds for concern, but especially if they exceed a quarter of an inch in size.
We like to follow the idea that it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you suspect you have an irregular mole that needs to be checked, call Dr. Deborah Mendelson, Board Certified Phoenix Dermatologist, at 602-944-4626 to schedule an appointment.
